Within a year of Voyager Space’s launch, the team had already solidified itself as a major player in the market by acquiring both the robotics and on-orbit servicing firm Altius Space Machines and the chemicals and materials company Pioneer Astronautics, all while expanding its influence in the industry. In September 2020, a major milestone was marked when Bishop Airlock became the first permanent commercial addition to the International Space Station.

Of course, these milestones weren’t just a matter of luck, but the streamlined vision combining innovation, sustainability and a humanistic approach that helps the company stand out from other players in the sector.

In an interview with NASDAQ , CEO Dylan Taylor discussed the impetus for creating the firm: “We have high-level innovation in the NewSpace sector. However, we’re not getting a lot of the infrastructure built in space, so we need to take that level of innovation and lend it to these larger infrastructure projects.”

Taylor continues, “The thesis behind the company was that you needed a company with ambition but also capability and that the best people in the industry would want to work for a company like that.”

As Voyager centers its focus on space developments, it allows it to differentiate its services from other aerospace companies that focus on other areas and bring a new level of innovation to build a strong portfolio while nurturing space entrepreneurs. The technology Voyager Space develops can provide answers to challenges found in space and on Earth by their investment in space-based agriculture and orbital debris mitigation technologies and policies.

Among their technology goals, Voyager Space’s dynamic infrastructure builds upon a more sustainable space economy with standardized hardware that helps lower costs. Thus far, it has allowed the Voyager team to develop crewed platforms, on-orbit satellite servicing, orbital debris removal, superior satellite communications and visualization systems, and controllable solid propulsion.

Another reason Voyager Space has skyrocketed to success is its diversification in capabilities. The Launch Company, a launch service company; Valley Tech Systems, a propulsion and signals intelligence company; and XO Markets, a commercial space and infrastructure and services organization that includes NanoRacks, DreamUp, and Starlab Oasis, are among the other significant acquisitions. Communications and software developer Space Micro and spaceflight developer ZIN Technologies were also integrated into Voyager’s operating platform.

New technologies have also allowed them to develop the holy grail of space infrastructure: space stations. Dylan Taylor has mentioned that Voyager Space was awarded one of three contracts by NASA to help build Starlab. This new space station will address future market needs and replace the International Space Station when deorbited by 2030.

Space exploration provides an excellent opportunity to create tangible solutions that address the growing challenges (climate change issues, health concerns, space debris) we face on Earth. Voyager’s projects, including Starlab, will help harness exploration, space tourism, and scientific research like biopharma drug development, AgTech and food scarcity research. These focuses will help bring any sustainable innovations down to Earth to benefit humans and our greatest challenges.

Voyager’s revolutionizing commercial space services also allowed numerous nations on Earth to become space-faring for the first time. This access to space can even influence students to consider career paths in STEM and empower innovators to start their own space companies. Dylan Taylor has also focused on helping to democratize access to space exploration for leaders.
